Spanish artist and painter Fernando Pérez, known for his illustrations of historical scenes, was among the winners of the 2012 World Cup of Art auction.
The “Dancing In The Moonlight” poster, which debuted during the 2013 World Cup, sold for $1,822,000 at auction in New York City.
The auction drew a record $6.8 million for the artworks sold, which also included works by Salvador Dalí, Michelangelo, Salvador Dali and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Pérez also sold a large collection of works by artists from the United Kingdom and France, including the Pablo Picasso Mona Lisa and the late Pablo Picassos Mona Lisas, among others.
Auctioneer Michael Lefebvre told CNNMoney he was pleased to be part of the auction, but was disappointed to not have won the work.
He said that if he had won, the piece would have been on display in Spain.
The artworks are housed at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.
